Photographer for Therapists in London: How to Get the Right Images for Your Practice

Looking for a photographer for therapists? Why generic corporate headshots don't work for your practice, and how to get the right mix of website portraits and directory photos in London.

Imagine this scenario: A potential client is scrolling through a directory of therapists in London. They are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and looking for someone they can trust. They click on your profile or your website.

What’s the first thing they see?

If it’s a cropped, slightly pixelated holiday photo or an overly formal corporate headshot, it sends a message. It might not be the message you want. In a profession built entirely on trust, safety, and human connection, your photos need to reflect that warmth before a client even reads your “About Me” page.

As a London photographer, I’ve worked with many therapists, counsellors, and psychologists to create images that do exactly that. Here is a guide on how we can work together to get the perfect images for your practice.

Why Generic Headshots Don’t Work for Therapists

Most corporate headshots are designed to look sharp and corporate. But as a therapist, you aren’t trying to look like a city banker. You need to come across as approachable, empathetic, and grounded.

Your imagery needs to do a few specific jobs:

  • Establish trust: Clients want to see the person they will be opening up to.
  • Show your environment: Seeing where the therapy takes place demystifies the process and lowers the barrier to entry for nervous clients.
  • Fit multiple platforms: You don’t just need one photo. You need different crops and styles for your website, Psychology Today, BACP directories, and LinkedIn.

Where Should We Do the Therapist Photography Shoot?

Every practice is different, which is why I offer some options for your session depending on the look and feel you want to achieve:

1. In a Consulting Room

If you have your own practice space or use a regular consulting room in London, shooting on-location is a fantastic option. It allows us to capture the authentic environment where you work. We can get shots of you in your element, showing the space a client will actually sit in.

2. In My London Studio

If you don’t have access to your room for a shoot, or if you prefer a clean, contemporary, and beautifully lit backdrop, you can come to my studio. Here, we can control the lighting perfectly and create a professional, calm environment that keeps the focus entirely on you.

3. Outside

Photos outside can work well. Showing people in a natural environment can give a sense of calm and help with the relaxed look of the images. It’s obviously weather dependent, but I’ve photographed many therapists outside in the past.

The Types of Shots We Will Capture

To give you a complete library of images for your website and marketing, a standard session isn’t just about smiling at the camera. We will aim to capture a mix of three key styles:

  • Warm, Professional Therapist Headshots: Perfect for directory profiles (like Psychology Today or BACP) where a clear, friendly, and close-up face shot is required to stand out in search results.
  • Editorial Portraits: Wider, lifestyle shots that work beautifully as banner images on your website’s homepage or about page.
  • In-Action / Client Interaction Shots: These are highly effective for websites. By bringing a friend or colleague to act as a “client,” we can take natural, candid photos of you talking, listening, and interacting. It gives prospective clients a literal preview of what a session with you feels like.(Insert Photo: A candid, over-the-shoulder shot of a therapist talking/listening to a client)

Ready to Update Your Practice’s Imagery?

Your photos are often the very first step in a client’s therapeutic journey with you. Making sure they feel welcomed before they even send that initial email is worth the investment.

If you are a therapist based in London and looking to refresh your website photos or directory headshots, I’d love to help.

Get in touch with me today to discuss your practice and how we can tailor a shoot to your specific needs.
